After a deadly mistake sapped public confidence in inoculations, the medical community found an ally in the King of Rock 'n Roll.


On Oct. 28 1956, backstage at "The Ed Sullivan Show," the then 21-year-old Presley extended his left arm. In went the needle. Off went the flashbulbs. A polio-free star was born.
